THE BAND:
In a career spanning three decades, Elaine Silva Moreira - Lan Lanh - has created the rhythm of her own journey, incorporating a panoply of sound and sharing her talent with some of the greatest names in Brazilian and international music. At the invitation of Carlinhos Brown she became part of a select group of batuqueiros – percussionists - for his first solo show in the 1990s. From that moment, she has never stopped. Playing with Elba Ramalho, Tim Maia, Titãs, Marisa Monte and Cássia Eller in Brasil as well as accompanying Cindy Lauper on tours of Europe and Brazil, Lan Lanh knows how to show that Girls just want to have fun. In town for a week from Brazil, she brings her new trio to DUMBO, joined on stage with João Felippe Brasil and Guto Menezes. Their melodic arrangements for accoustic guitar, viola caipira and cavaquinho give wings to the flight of Lan Lanh’s soaring solo percussion.
THE ARTIST:
Damon May was born in the southern tier of upstate New York. Hailing from the tiny suburb of Endwell, Damon excelled early on in athletics, specifically basketball and baseball. His love of drawing led him to take art classes at Wright State and then Binghamton University where he received a BFA in studio art. After working for a sports uniform clothing designer in Endicott, New York, he moved to Ohio to work for a sports apparel company doing graphic design and photography. He began photographing models for the company which allowed him to develop skills as a photographer, which he quickly developed into a personal business specializing in portraiture. Ever a restless soul, Damon has continued to push the boundaries of portraiture, site specific photography, and landscape inspired narrative that capture the essence of his subjects with perceptive, personal insight and attention to detail.
THE GALLERY:
The Space Station, by This Friday or Next Friday, premieres at this year’s Live at the Archway. Tfnf is likely the tiniest, most inconsequential art gallery in DUMBO, Brooklyn, probably in NYC, and maybe on the face of the earth. It was founded by Nathan Sinai Rayman, and he runs it with Zach Seeger, his Director of Programs.
